1991 Budget Guide: Estimated Prices for Crop Operating Inputs and Capital Investment Items AgEcon
Snyder, Darwin P..
Current costs for 1991 crop inputs and capital investments common to New York agriculture are summarized and/or estimated from supplier surveys and contacts made in early 1991. The guide includes seed, fertilizer, pesticides, labor, and fuel costs for crop inputs. Capital investment items include power and field equipment and structures. An index of prices paid by New York dairy farmers is provided for 1985 through 1990 along with estimates for 1991.

A 4-years' analysis of the meiofauna community of a dumping site for TiO2-waste off the Dutch coast OMA
Smol, N.; Huys, R.; Vincx, M..
Sublittoral meiofauna of 24 stations was monitored over 4 years (1984-1987) in and around a dumping site for TiO2- acid waste in the Southern Bight of the North Sea off the Dutch coast. The meiofauna was examined quantitatively and qualitatively with special reference to the nematode and the copepod community structure down to species level and to the trophic structure of the nematodes. Biological, sedimentological, geographical parameters and the concentration of several heavy metals were subject to multivariate statistical analysis and classification techniques to evaluate the impact of the TiO2- dumping activities. The meiofauna is dominated by nematodes, copepods, gastrotrichs and turbellarians. There is a...

A BIOECONOMIC ANALYSIS OF THE NORTHERN ANCHOVY AgEcon
Conrad, Jon M..
A simple bioeconomic model was specified and estimated for the central subpopulation of the northern anchovy (Engraulis mordax). Net population growth was described by a power function and harvest by the U. S. reduction fleet was modelled by an exponential production function. When incorporated into a bioeconomic model they allowed the derivation of two explicit functions, Y = Ö(X) and Y = Ø(X) which could be used to depict the bioeconomic optimum. The roots of Ö(X) have important economic interpretations and can be used to characterize the economic status of the fishery. The positively-sloped segment of the Ö(X) curve may be used as an approximately-optimal adaptive management policy. For the set of bioeconomic parameters circa 1990, anchovy biomass...

A Comparative Financial Ratio Analysis of U.S. Farmer Cooperatives Using Nonparametric Statistics AgEcon
Royer, Jeffrey S..
A comparative ratio analysis using nonparametric statistical methods provides no evidence to support the hypothesis that U.S. farmer cooperatives generally are financially weaker than other firms. Although some cooperative groups had lower current ratios than industry standards, most of these groups consisted of marketing associations for which differences may be explained largely by the unique business relationships between the associations and their patrons. Comparisons of debt/equity ratios indicate that, except for regional grain and farm supply associations, cooperatives generally are less leveraged than other firms. The overall financial strength of cooperatives appears better than during the early 1980s.

A comparative-study of nitrogen and carbon uptake by phytoplankton in a coastal eutrophic ecosystem (bay of Brest, france) ArchiMer
Dauchez, S; Queguiner, B; Treguer, P; Zeyons, C.
Nitrogen (N-15) and carbon (C-14) uptake rates and hydrological, chemical and biological parameters were monitored at a single station during spring (March-April 1989) in a coastal eutrophic ecosystem of western Europe : the Bay of Brest. Before the spring growth of phytoplankton populations, total nitrogen and carbon uptake rates were low (almost-equal-to 0.3-mu-mol C.1(-1).h-1 and almost-equal-to 0.025-mu-mol N.l(-1).h-1). During the spring bloom, these uptake rates reached high values (0.5-mu-mol C.1(-1).h-1 and 0.28-mu-mol N.1(-1).h-1); at this time, nitrate was the main source of nitrogen production, although relative preference index (RPI) values showed that ammonium was the preferred nitrogen form for phytoplankton (RPI (NO3) < 1 ; RPI (NH4) >...

A COMPARISON OF PRICING STRUCTURES AT VIDEO AND TRADITIONAL CATTLE AUCTIONS AgEcon
Bailey, DeeVon; Peterson, Monte C..
The number of cattle sold through video auctions has increased dramatically during the past five years. In this study structural differences in pricing between a group of traditional auctions and the nation's largest satellite video cattle auction are examined. A Chow test for structural pricing differences reveals that the influence of lot characteristics, market information, and merchandising strategies on cattle prices are essentially identical at both types of auctions. However, optimal lot size is larger at video auctions than at traditional auctions.

A contribution to the knowledge of the pectinacean Mollusca (Bivalvia: Propeamussiidae, Entoliidae, Pectinidae) from the Indonesian Archipelago Naturalis
Dijkstra, H.H..
During the Indonesian-Dutch SNELLIUS -II Expedition (1984-1985) to the Indonesian Archipelago 46 pectinacean species were collected from the Flores Sea and Banda Sea (5°52'-9°57'S, 118°12'-123°58'E) at littoral to bathyal depth (835 m). One new pectinid genus, viz. Glorichlamys gen. nov., six new propeamussiids, viz. Parvamussium araneum spec. nov., Parvamussium carbaseum spec. nov., Parvamussium cassium spec. nov., Parvamussium undosum spec. nov., Parvamussium virgatum spec. nov., Cyclopecten cancellus spec. nov., and one new entoliid, viz. Pectinella aequoris spec. nov. are described. Twelve new records of Pectinacea for this region are mentioned. For Ostrea squamosa Gmelin, 1791 a lectotype is designated. In addition Pectinidae of the...

A COUNTY-LEVEL MODEL OF MANUFACTURING PLANT RECRUITMENT WITH IMPROVED INDUSTRIAL SITE QUALITY MEASUREMENT AgEcon
Kriesel, Warren; McNamara, Kevin T..
Empirical analysis of manufacturing plant location requires the use of a single industrial site quality measure. Under hedonic price theory, the price of industrial sites can be explained by their quality characteristics. The estimated site price is included with ten other location factors in an ordered, categorical logit model of plant attraction to Georgia counties. The results inform public decision-makers of the relative impact of site location factors and how changes in location factors can alter the probability of attracting a manufacturing plant.
